CitiFinancial loses the personal data of 3.9 million

Comment — The New York Times is reporting that CitiFinancial, the consumer finance subsidiary of Citigroup, lost computer tapes with the personal data of around 3.9 million customers while they were transported by UPS.

Privacy considerations come to mind of course, but I’ve mentioned privacy on this blog before while discussing ZabaSearch and Evil, and this has more to do with security imho than with the actual content of the data.

Indeed, the financial community has the RadianzNet. A VPN tunnel between two premises on this financial extranet is a highly secure and available setup, and allows you to check the integrity of your data as you transmit it. All these advantages over tapes transportion can only make you wonder why they were travelling via UPS in the first place.
