Comment — Like myself, you surely wondered at once why this headline would be worth your interest. After all, given that salt production techniques are ages old and that Mayas reportedly were excellent mathematicians and astronomers, there’s no reason they shouldn’t produce salt.

Intrigued, I read the Reuters story and found Heather McKillop‘s explanation:

“These saltworks that we have found in the lagoon indicate the importance of non-state-controlled production in pre-industrial societies”

Why on earth would any pre-industrial society not have its share of non-state-controlled individual trade?
