Porn probe in New Zealand

Amusing — There is an ongoing scandal in New Zealand, regarding "sexually explicit images of sex acts". Some involves violence, simulated violence, and even bestiality. The New Zealand Herald reports it even includes a "cartoon of Marge Simpson performing oral sex on husband Homer". That must be so cool.

Anyway, I could not resist reading pieces of the ensuing debate. Two points stroke me.

On the one side, there is the significant chunk of New Zealand police's IT resources that is apparently wasted by users who store and share porn via their inboxes. The figure varies ten-fold from a report to another so is not worth mentioning. The point here is I'm unsure to which extent said figure differs from an organization to another.

On the other, it never occurred to me that New Zealanders were conservative to the extent that a national newspaper can urge the Police chief to clean up and go in an editorial. As point out in said editorial, it is hardly endemic to find hardcore porn on 0.3% of police officers' computers. But nonetheless, public esteem for the police has reportedly plunged. And given the first point that stroke me, I found this rather silly.
